LET'S PLAY - CROCHET VINTAGE - FREE PATTERN #5

free crochet patterns, vintage, clusters, v-stitch, how to crochet

Hello Week #5 of Crochet Vintage

DID you enjoy crocheting last week's ALTERNATING SHELLS crochet stitch?

Did you have fun with Week #4 ?  I  hope you had fun changing colours and playing with the stitch pattern.

I can imagine using the Alternating shells stitch in a lovely summer vest or cardigan, or as part of a little girl's dress.  I love how easy it is to crochet this stitch and can imagine using it for so many projects, scarves, bags, garments, and home decor.

In the past, I have crocheted a circular cushion cover using the Alternating Shells stitch, so easy to adjust when increasing the size of the circumference.  I love it!  Have a quick look here.

This week #5

I have a lovely CLUSTER V-STITCH from my vintage 1970's stitch collection.  (It was my mother-in-law who taught me this stitch in 1974, and I used it to make a baby blanket.)

This Cluster V-stitch is a stitch you can play with.  I will show you how to crochet a swatch with the basic stitches.

Then we will have a bit of fun, I have added extra instructions on how to change the sequence of the stitches to create a slightly different pattern, using the same basic stitches.

You can find the ALTERNATIVE CLUSTER V-STITCH instructions at the end of this post.

Have some fun crocheting and using the stitch sequence either way, basically you get two (2) different patterns from one.

You will find this CLUSTER V-STITCH an easy stitch to master; simple, quick and quite meditative, and of course you can change colour in every row if you wish.

Are you ready to join me?  Let's play and have some Crochet Vintage fun!

PATTERN STARTS:

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Cluster V-stitch (CLV): (dc3tog, ch2, dc3tog) in same st or space.

dc3tog:  [Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops] 3 times (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

V-stitch (V-st):  (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in same st or space

SPECIAL TIP:  I use a 4.5mm hook for the foundation row then change to 4mm hook in last 3ch.  This way my foundation chain does not end up tighter than the rest of the swatch.

CHANGING COLOUR

Change the look of the pattern stitch, by changing colour every row or whenever you desire.  When changing colour begin the row with a 'standing dc' instead of Ch3, and end with 2dc in last dc, instead of top of ch3.

Market Tote - Crochet Vintage 1970s

free crochet patterns, bags, cotton, how to crochet

CLOUDBERRY Market Tote is based on a vintage
1970s crochet stitch.
This filet-style stitch appeared mainly in garment design
using only one colour.

I love this crochet stitch, it is easy and quick, and when you add colour to each row, you are rewarded with a fantastic looking piece of fabric, and what better way to display this filet-style stitch than incorporating it into an easy care and easy wear market tote.

I have called this market tote pattern  Cloudberry because the colours remind me of a small orange fruit, which goes by that name.  It can sometimes be found in Scotland and Wales, however it is very well-known in Scandinavian countries, Russia, Canada and Alaska.  It grows naturally in the more northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere and can withstand cold temperatures as low as -40C.  What is most memorable to me are the colours of this raspberry-like fruit, and the very tasty jam which can be made with them.

CLOUDBERRY Market Tote Crochet Bag PATTERN includes written instructions for a bag with approx. circumference 30in (76cm); 17in (43cm) deep; strap 23in (58cm).  The pattern includes accompanying photographs at the end of the written instructions.

CLOUDBERRY Market Tote is designed with a gathered base, single strap, and with a drawstring at bag opening.

Cloudberry is the perfect farmer's market bag - throw in your fruits and vegetables and enjoy your day.

Light and breezy, can be easily rolled up and hidden away in your handbag for those unplanned purchases. Can also be used as a beach bag.

Cloudberry Market Tote is based on a
vintage 1970s crochet stitch.
