My ARROW HEADS Saga

arrow heads, arrow stitch pattern, hats, mittens, scarf, headband, how to crochet, crochet ebook,

My lengthy hiatus!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Valentine's Day, to you all. I hope you all had an awesome time with family and friends celebrating these holidays.

It is now March and I apologize for a long three (3) months since my last blogpost ARROW HEADS CROCHET COLLECTION in November.

Between November and now there has been quite a bit going on in my personal life and I have not been able to crochet or knit since September 2018 (if you want to know more, click HERE, then scroll down to More Recently).

However, I am aimimg to catch up, by working on writing up some of my patterns which I designed and crocheted/knitted over a year ago and at the time I was unable to write up and share with you.

NEW CROCHET PATTERNS

I have finally added the last two (2) crochet patterns to my Arrow Heads Crochet Collection EBook, 1. Double Arrow Scarf and 2. Multi-Arrow Hat.

1. Double Arrow Scarf

Double Arrow Scarf is an easy, enjoyable crochet experience working back and forth, you should be able to make a quick scarf in no time and dare I say from one (1) ball of yarn (of course it depends what you use, but it can be done).

PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY: Easy
SIZES: One (1) size
MEASUREMENTS: Length 68in (173cm); Width 5.5in (14cm)
YARN USED: Lincraft Winter Warmth ● 100% Acrylic Mohair ● 50g ● 306yd (280m)
YARDAGE: Approx. 306yd (280m)
SUBSTITUTE YARN: Any Lace Weight mohair yarn.
TENSION: Approx. 18sts x 16 rows to 4in (10cm) in arrow stitch. Scarf is worked with larger hook and looser tension than recommended on label.
NOTIONS: 5.5mm hook, Yarn needle
PATTERN NOTES: Scarf is worked flat. Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of the pattern.

2. Multi-Arrow Hat

To finish off the collection I have included the Multi-Arrow Hat which uses the arrow pattern all the way around the body of the hat. If you use a yarn which changes colour gradually for the Arrow round you will get this cute multi-coloured hat, I chose a darker shade of plain coloured yarn to accentuate the awesome colours in the variegated yarn, I think this has to be my favourite!

PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY: Easy Intermediate
SIZES: One (1) size - Hints on size adjustment at end of pattern
MEASUREMENTS: Circumference 20in (51cm) Length 7.5in (19cm)
YARN USED:
Hayfield Bonus Breeze DK ● 100% Acrylic ● 100g ● 306yds (280m) ● MC Embers (477)
Hayfield Bonus DK ● 100% Acrylic ● 100g ● 306yds (280m) ● CC Purple (840) ● 1 ball of each
SUBSTITUTE YARNS: Any similar DK yarn, one ball plain bold colour, one ball variegated colour. Always check with YARNSUB website to get the best match.
YARDAGE: Approx.: 41g = 125yd (114m);
TENSION: 22sts x 20 rows to 4in (10cm) in sc stitch
NOTIONS: 4mm hook, Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES: Hat is worked top down in the round. Instructions are for a two (2) colour hat. Each round is completed before changing colour. Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of this pattern.

Spring is in the air

Spring is here and the sun is shining and temperatures are getting warmer, I am so excited!

A week ago on Sunday, we walked the Chilham Circular (approx 10 miles) starting and finishing at Chilham, Kent, UK.  It was a fabulous day with loads of sunshine, a fresh breeze blowing reminding us it is still only March, and the temperature rose from 11C in the morning to 17C in the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed  walking the woodlands, Yew forests, the Kentish Downs, upland and downland fields, panoramic views, bluebell woods (not blooming yet) and passed through the Godmersham Park estate.  What a fabulous walk, we will definitely go back and do it again when all the leaves are on the trees.

It's all this lovely spring weather walking which is guiding my crochet projects at the moment.

Spring crochet

I have loads of crochet hats for winter walks and desperately need spring time hats, something to keep my head warm and keep the wind out of my ears, especially when the fresh breeze carries with it a "wind chill factor", and not a hat made with wool or alpaca, but a lighter weight cotton or bamboo yarn.

Ta-dah! the little Rambler hat headband cowl was created using a lovely 80% bamboo 20% wool yarn from Sirdar called "Smiley Stripes".  At first I wasn't too sure about the orange but when the lovely pattern started to emerge with each row, I was loving it.

I can wear it to keep my head warm, or open up the end and double it over for a headband and ear warmer, or slip it down and wear it around my neck, just lovely.  Rambler is similar in style to my first hat/headband/cowl which I made in autumn 2012 on our Scottish highlands trip (see this post) a totally different pattern, whereas this spring design is super easy and quick to make.

Here's my first SPRING design for 2014
RAMBLER Hat Headband Cowl

See below for the pattern details and instructions

PATTERN DETAILS:

A simple crochet hat, headband, cowl, for spring/autumn weather walking.

SKILL:  Easy

MEASUREMENTS:  Circumference 20in (50.8cm) , Height 8in (20.3cm)
TENSION/GAUGE:  20sts x 20 rows to 4in; in pattern stitch.

PATTERN NOTES:  The tension/gauge is only a guideline, it is not critical to this pattern.  As long as your circumference is big enough to fit your head, and the height is long enough for the hat to cover your head and ears, that is all you need to achieve here.

Patterns, Crochet and me!

WIP - Tick. Done.
Crochet Hearts Doily now done and dusted.  Must say for the time I spent on this piece, I could have made a number of baby hats, mittens, bootees, etc.  However I appreciate the experience and I will file away the knowledge of this exercise for future reference. Here is a photo of the finished doily, just before cutting thread and prior to blocking.

Heart Thoughts!
I am glad to have chosen two heart doilies to trial.  I personally prefer pattern No. 1 from Coats and Clarke "Hearts Desire".... simple, easy beginners heart doily, and a very easy pattern to remember.  I really like the ease of crochet, the quickness and versatility .... use it with any yarn and hook size.  I think I will definitely use this pattern again ... maybe not as a doily but for use in making a beret or summer hat!  Will see!

Today is free day!
I am now ploughing through my handwritten scribbles, which I decipher and turn into patterns which make sense.... I hope.... and of course this is not my favourite part of crocheting.  However it needs to be done if my intention nowadays is to crochet for pleasure and for sharing... and opposed to crocheting madly for hours each day just to reach my quota by the end of the week .... so I can have stock for my market stall!  Those days are now gone, by choice, and I am now stress free!

I am going to share a few patterns with you soon, which will be free!  Simple and quick patterns.

So stay tuned.... there will be ...  NEWBORN Baby Hat FREE PATTERN

Final adornments!

I have finally managed to finish embellishing my summer crochet hat and the lime head band .......

needed to leave them be for a while ......

brain ticking away...

decisions, decisions.........

sometimes the creative juices need to brew on the back burner.....

well it's always a challenge creating with what you have in your stash.....

or not even knowing what it's going to be when you start.....

playing around with the idea......

trying something out.....

letting your fingers create as you go...

never knowing where it will end....

and the surprise of the finished product....

I love following where the crochet takes me....

sometimes it flows....
and sometimes it stops abruptly....

but every now and then it just takes over...

stitches come from the heavens....

creation with feeling...
